2024-2025 Black In Neuro Programming
While Black In Neuro Week is our largest event, the Black In Neuro organizers volunteer year-round to provide free professional development, mentorship, networking, and other opportunities for our community and the public. Below are descriptions of the current Black In Neuro Programming Committees and some of their upcoming events. These events would not be successful without you all joining, asking questions, and letting your colleagues know about them, so THANK YOU ♥️
Professional Development
The Professional Development workshops are tailored to our Black In Neuro community members in order to disseminate information on navigating academic spaces and increasing employability. Our team aims to promote professional development opportunities by taking suggestions from community members and identifying gaps in information dissemination within neuroscience-related fields. This year, we aim to center our events on exposing undergraduates to professional development opportunities, specifically targeting minority serving institutions like historically Black Colleges and Universities.
In April, we hosted a science communication workshop to teach undergraduates how to pitch their science and prepare for poster and oral presentations. During Black In Neuro Week in July, we held a Python programming workshop with hands-on activities for participants. Other upcoming events include:
A microaggression workshop to teach undergraduates the necessary tools to identify, combat, and advocate against microaggressions within their workspace or community - Friday, October 18, 2024 @ 12:30PM Eastern with Dr. Jamila Hackworth
“Training for First-Time Reviewers” - Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at 2PM Eastern with Reviewer Zero
A follow-up Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship workshop to expose undergraduates to the application process and perks of summer science internships - Date and Time to come!
The professional development of our Black In Neuro members is one of our priorities and we are excited for the launch of these workshops in 2024. Stay tuned for the dates and registration links for our upcoming events!
Chapters
Black In Neuro Chapters is an in-person initiative designed to foster community among our neuroscientists at the regional level. By connecting neuroscientists at every career stage, we aim to expand the impact of Black In Neuro through enriching programs and activities. We are excited to announce several new developments:
Chapters Week: A dedicated week of events and activities to celebrate our local chapters and strengthen the network of regional members across the BIN community
Black In Neuro SURP Symposium: The inaugural event showcases the summer research of undergraduate neuroscience students while providing opportunities for mentorship, professional development, and networking across career levels
Launch of BIN Manhattan Social Media: Follow us on social media to stay updated with the latest news, events, and highlights from our first chapter, BIN Manhattan, which has now grown to over 90 members and continues to expand.
Regional Participation: We encourage you to express interest in starting a local chapter in your area or join us at the next BIN Manhattan event. Email us at chapters@blackinneuro.com or manhattan@blackinneuro.com for more information.
Be part of this dynamic and growing network, and help us build a stronger, more connected Black In Neuro community!
Seminar Series
The seminar series is a cornerstone in recognizing and celebrating the contributions of Black neuroscientists within the Black In Neuro community. The Seminar Series features engaging science talks from community members across varying career levels, backgrounds, and neuroscience disciplines. Watch our previous events on YouTube that include:
Dr. Jennifer Manly, Professor of Neuropsychology in the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, "Lifecourse social and structural determinants of later life cognitive function and dementia risk"
Dr. Jasmine Hope, Postdoctoral Fellow, Emory School of Medicine, “Electrical stimulation based treadmill training ,modulates spinal reflex excitability in people with stroke”
Join us for our next seminar!
Friday, November 1, 2024 @ 12PM Eastern - Grad student Seminar Presentation, Chelesa Fearce
Mentorship Program
On October 31st, 2023, we launched our first mentorship program with 10 mentor/mentee pairs for mentees at the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate levels. The goal of the Black In Neuro Mentorship Program is to connect trainees with mentors within the Black In Neuro community to support their academic and professional development. In addition to mentorship pairing, the program provides seminars to further assist participants with their professional academic development. Previous topics include effective scientific communication, creating an individual development plan, NIH funding opportunities, and data presentation and accessibility. You can learn more about some of our mentor/mentee pairs in the links below.
Upcoming Events at SfN
In addition to the programming events listed above, be sure to check us out at the annual Society for Neuroscience Conference in Chicago this Fall! Find us at the conference for some Black In Neuro swag, and if you identify as Black In Neuro, join us Sunday, October 6th for our third BIN@SfN social.
